Jen (Friesen) Fast - Class of 2003

Why did you choose MCI?

I was approached by the MCI recruiting staff after they had heard me sing. They offered me a scholarship to MCI which I saw as an answer to prayer, since I was unsure about attending the public school. What attracted me to MCI was the high quality music program, a smaller student population, and the Christian based values.

Based on your time here, why should others choose MCI?

If you want a different high school experience, choose MCI. Not too many people can say they loved their high school experience, but I did. It’s more than learning what’s in the books. I got the attention and care that I needed from the teachers and when I struggled, they put in the time and the energy that got me through those challenges. Also, the opportunities that MCI offers; including travelling on music trips, performing musicals, attending social events, and being apart of missions trips are both incredible and character building.

How did MCI impact your life?

MCI impacted my life in many ways. It strengthened my relationship with God, and helped me root myself in Him. I experienced incredible encounters with God that shaped who I am today.
When most of your friends live at the school, you spend a lot of time together. Because of this, I made deep connections with amazing people who will forever be a part of my life.

Looking back, how do you view your time in MCI's music program?

Since I love music, the program was one of the highlights of my time at MCI. I had the chance to be a part of 3 choirs, and could not have been happier! It was the perfect place to make friends, sing amazing pieces, and provided awesome opportunities to travel. I learned to love choral music, and took pride in our performances.

What did you learn from being involved in MCI's music program?

The main thing that I learned was to have confidence in myself and my abilities. With God’s guidance, and encouragement from the choral director, I was able to start believing in myself, and not let fear hold me back. My gift really grew throughout my four years at MCI. I feel blessed to have had the time in the music program that I did. The confidence that I gained there has continued to have a wonderful effect on my life.
