GVC Tournament Recap by Nancy Ratzlaff, Head Coach - JV girls basketball The MCI JV girls basketball team traveled to Winkler this past weekend for a tournament. We had only six girls for Friday’s two games. We had a good start to the tournament as we lost to Garden Valley by only 5 points, (32-27) Larissa Giesbrecht was top scorer with 11 points. On Saturday, our team was a grand total of five, yes, five girls! We played John Taylor School from Winnipeg and this proved to be our toughest game as we lost 59-35. John Taylor went on to win all their games to earn first place in the tournament. All five MCI players scored, and Larissa took top scoring honors with 12 points. Our final game was played against W.C. Miller. We had a slow start, but our effective press caused numerous turnovers for Miller and all five girls contributed to the scoreboard to win the game 57-30! Maria Dirks played her best game of the season both offensively and defensively and netted a whopping 23 points. The small but mighty MCI girls’ team is to be commended for their never-give-up attitude and their consistent solid play during the tournament. Special mention goes out to Kelly Fehr who showed excellent leadership on the court and is a top-notch point guard.
