Blues play to mixed result in GVC tournament The MCI Blues varsity basketball team finished in 2nd place on the consolation side of the Garden Valley Collegiate Invitational Tournament over the weekend. MCI opened the tournament against College Jean Sauve (Winnipeg). The matchup turned out to be as lopsided as it appeared on paper, as the "AAAA" CJS controlled the play from the opening tip-off on route to a 110-55 win. In their second game of the tournament, MCI met W.C. Miller Collegiate. Early on, the familiar opponent proved to be a favourable match-up for the Blues. MCI came out flying, scoring 20 points in the first five minutes of play. The hot start gave MCI a sizeable lead that they would hold most of the game. Leading by as many as 30 points late in the third quarter, MCI looked poised to run away with the game. However, the fourth quarter played out to a completely different result, as Miller's offense caught fire and MCI's offense struggled. The Blues were outscored 25-5 in the final 10 minutes of play, as Miller pulled within four points. That's as close as the Aces would come, as MCI would hold on for the win. Dylan Shrupka's outside shooting led the way for MCI, as the Grade 12 point guard contributed 20 points. The consolation final saw MCI face off against the Steinbach Christian Flames.
