MCI prepares for M.E.S.H.

With the season of spring cleaning upon us, students and staff at Mennonite Collegiate Institute are preparing to get their hands dirty. The school is getting ready for their annual work day, M.E.S.H. (Many Eager Serving Hands). On May 7 & 8, students and staff will take their work outside the classroom to a variety of service-based organizations in the area. Among the beneficiaries are Winkler Bible Camp, Pembina Valley Bible Camp, and Ebenezer Home.
Formerly run as an MCI Student Council fundraiser, M.E.S.H. now operates as two days of community service and volunteerism. Principal Darryl Loewen also sees M.E.S.H. as being closely tied to the nature of the school.
“This is a meaningful expression of our mission statement as a school. It is also a meaningful expression of faith in action and a practice of volunteerism,” said Loewen.
While it was only renamed M.E.S.H. in the last decade, MCI’s service days have been held annually for 33 years. Over this time, MCI students and staff have undertaken a variety of tasks. From basic lawn care in Altona to major restoration projects with Habitat for Humanity in Winnipeg, M.E.S.H. has given students and staff many opportunities to serve their local area. Loewen is hopeful that M.E.S.H. will once again be a meaningful experience for both the benefiting organizations and the MCI participants.
