Courses
MCI offers all courses that ECY branch of the Manitoba government requires for graduation. They also offer the following electives:
Grade 9
Art 10G: Art basics will be learned through studio experience centered on various drawing media including acrylic paint and clay as well as an introduction to art history, aesthetics and design.
French 10G: An introductory course with practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Keyboarding 15G: This course introduces students to some basic computer literacy. Correct keyboarding technique and word-processing skills are developed.
Music 11G (Jr. Vocal Ensemble): This auditioned choir serves as an introduction to singing in a smaller ensemble and provides an opportunity for students to use microphones, sing in harmony and explore a variety of musical styles.
Band 10G: Students choosing this elective are expected to have previous instrumental experience and will be challenged to grow musically through rehearsals and individual practice. Sectional leadership and ensemble opportunities may be available.
Grade 10
Art 20G: Students will continue to work with concepts taught in Art 10G while exploring new media and techniques.
ESL21G: This course is designed for international students who lack basic survival skills in English. Different aspects of language such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and English idioms are taught.
French 20G: Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills are enhanced and grammatical correctness and fluency are emphasized. French 10G is a prerequisite for this course.
Futures in Business 15G: This course introduces students to various business opportunities and develops an understanding of the importance of business concepts.
Music 20S (Chamber Choir): Goals of this auditioned 40-voice choir include encouraging the love of singing, developing music literacy, while providing opportunity to perform in a variety of events and venues.
International Bible 21E: This course is intended for international students who have a limited background in English and in Bible knowledge. Stories, time lines and maps are used to introduce students to Old Testament history, the life of Christ and the plan of salvation.
Start your own Business 25G: This course emphasizes skills that will assist young people to plan and start small business. Topic covered include business financing, contract law and formation of a business plan.
Band 20G: Students choosing this elective are expected to have previous instrumental experience and will be challenged to grow musically through rehearsals and individual practice. Sectional leadership and ensemble opportunities may be available.
Dramatic Arts 20G: Theatre Tech. Students who qualify for this course through and interview process will learn the inner working of MCI’s state of the art 460 seat theatre, Buhler Hall. Course curriculum will include lighting control, sound mixing, stage managing and show set up and take down. Students are required to accumulate 60 hours of practical experience (not including class time) either working shows or performing other tech support related tasks.
ICT 25S Print Communications: The purpose of the course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to plan and create documents for personal and business communications.
Grade 11
Accounting Principles 30S: This course provides teaching and practice in generally accepted accounting principles for both service and merchandising businesses.
Art 30S: This course provides students with an increasing amount of freedom of expression while working through problems of increasing complexity. Prerequisite Art 10G.
Biology 30S: The intricacies of life are explored through discussion and laboratory work, using humankind and animals as examples of study.
Chemistry 30S: This course introduces students to the activities of science, the atomic theory, the mole concept, stoichiometry, gas laws, chemical reaction, solution chemistry and organic chemistry.
ESL 31G: Prerequisite ESL 21G. Course work is partly determined by individual placement test and usually includes an emphasis on vocabulary.
French 30S: Prerequisite French 20. This course is designed to encourage students to use French in a practical way using letter writing, reading newspaper and magazines, and listening to French radio and television programs.

Music 30S (Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Resonate): Students who successfully audition for the 14 voice ensemble will be challenged with a rich experience of contemporary choral music. This choir performs at a variety of school related events and venues.
Physics 30S: This course is recommended for students interested in science and mathematics and a must for those wishing to explore careers in engineering. Topics will include waves (focusing on light and sound), mechanics (motion, velocity and acceleration) and fields (gravitational, electrostatic and magnetic).
Band 30S: Students choosing this elective are expected to have previous instrumental experience and will be challenged to grow musically through rehearsals and individual practice. Sectional leadership and ensemble opportunities may be available.

ICT 35S Data Collection and Analysis: The purpose oft his course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to collect, organize, manipulate and analyze data and solve problems using spread sheets.
Digital Medial 31G: This course teaches students the fundamentals about digital cameras and ever expanding subject of digital photography. Basic photographic techniques as well as digital photo editing and processing using Adobe Photoshop Elements will be taught
Grade 12
Art 40S: Prerequisite: Art 10G. Art 20G or 30S are also recommended. This course is designed to help develop the artist as an individual, building on foundations laid in previous art education. Work produced in this class will be potential material for an entrance portfolio for post-secondary studies.
Biology 40S: For those students interested in developing an understanding of plant and animal life science, this course serves as a good introduction.
Calculus 42A – Advanced Placement (AP): This course emphasizes a multi- representation approach to calculus, with concepts, results, and problems expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. This course is comparable to university calculus courses and university credit can be obtained with a strong mark in the College Board examination.
Chemistry 40S – Prerequisite Chemistry 30S: This course is required for those students interested in a career in science or medicine. Major topics include the periodic table, equilibrium systems, pH and acid-based reactions and redox.
ESL 41G: Prerequisite: ESL 31G: Students will work to develop advanced English language skills to promote success in regular Language Arts and other courses or for successful completion of TOEFL examinations.
French 40S – Prerequisite 30S This course places emphasis on conversation, writing and reading in the French language. Opportunity for student exchange programs are available.
History 40S: World Issues: Specific attention is given to critical evaluation of the mass media, recent developments in Eastern Europe, continuing tensions in the Middle East and on broader topics like human rights and environmental concerns.
Music 40S (Chamber Choir): Goals of this auditioned 40 voice choir include encouraging the love of singing, developing musical literacy and performances in a variety of events and venues.

Physical Education 41G: Focus for this course includes personal fitness, developing sport for life and team and individual sports.
Physics 40S: Prerequisite: Physics 30S, For students interested in further studies in engineering, technology, agriculture or medical fields this course is highly recommended. It builds on topics covered in Physics 30S and creates a more complete exposure to fundamental principles.
Psychology 41G: The aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of psychology as a social science. The breadth of topics in the course will expose students to possible areas of post-secondary studies: arts, education, social work, health care etc.

Digital Media 41G: This course teaches basic techniques of digital video taping as well as video editing with Adobe Premiere Elements. Students will learn how to make a DVD, from capturing the video to editing it and producing a DVD with menus and chapters.
